Then you are suddenly choosing between steel or aluminium, single or twinset wings, donut or horseshoe shapes, different harness styles, and lift capacities that all sound sensible until you put them next to your actual diving.
That is really the key to how to choose a backplate wing - stop looking for the best one in general, and start building the right one for your diving. The right system depends on where you dive, what cylinders you use, how much exposure protection you wear, and whether you want a clean minimalist setup or something with a bit more built-in convenience.
Start with the type of diving you actually do
Before you compare brands or materials, define your most common dives. A diver doing warm-water recreational shore and boat dives with a single cylinder has very different needs from someone diving cold water in a drysuit, carrying stages, or planning to move into twinsets.
If you mostly dive a Single tank often in a wetsuit or lighter kit, a single-tank wing with a straightforward harness is usually the best place to start. It keeps the system compact, stable and uncluttered. If your diving already includes twinsets or that is clearly where you are heading, it makes more sense to buy around that plan rather than trying to force a single-tank setup to do everything.

Lift capacity matters, but bigger is not automatically better. Too much lift can create unnecessary drag and can make the wing feel less tidy underwater. If you are diving an aluminium or steel single cylinder with sensible weighting, a moderate-lift wing is usually enough.
Twinset wings
Twinset wings are wider and built to support the extra mass and profile of doubles. They are not just single-tank wings with more lift. The shape is designed to distribute buoyancy properly around the twinset and maintain control in horizontal trim.
If you dive doubles regularly, use a dedicated twinset wing. It will trim better, sit better, and generally feel more stable. It also leaves less room for improvised fixes, which is usually a good thing in technical kit.

Steel backplates
Steel adds weight in a useful place - close to your centre of gravity and spread across your back rather than hanging from a belt. It can reduce how much ballast you need elsewhere and often improves trim at the same time.
The trade-off is travel. A steel plate is less appealing when baggage limits are tight or when you dive mostly in warm water with minimal weighting.
Aluminium backplates
Aluminium is lighter and better suited to travel or warm-water use. If you already need very little ballast, adding a heavy steel plate may not help at all. An aluminium plate keeps the rig light and simple, especially for divers moving between destinations and rental cylinders.
That said, aluminium is not automatically the better choice for recreational divers. If most of your diving is local and you wear thicker exposure protection, steel may make your whole system easier to balance.
Type Of Harness: Harness style matters more than many divers expect
The harness is where fit and usability come in. This is the part you actually live with on every dive.
A one-piece continuous webbing harness remains the standard for a reason. It is simple, secure, tough, and easy to customise once you understand the fit. There are fewer failure points, and every piece of hardware can be placed exactly where you want it. Wing shape, lift and profile
When comparing wings, divers often focus on lift numbers first. That matters, but shape matters as well.
Donut-style wings allow air to move more freely around the bladder. Many divers prefer them because they can be easier to vent from different positions and tend to feel more balanced. Horseshoe wings still have their supporters, particularly among divers used to a certain style of setup, but for many modern single and twinset systems, donut wings are the simpler choice.
Lift capacity should be based on need, not anxiety. You need enough buoyancy to support your cylinders, suit compression, and any equipment load in the water. You do not need the largest wing available just in case. Oversized wings can taco around cylinders, shift air in ways that feel clumsy, and add bulk where none is needed.
If you are unsure, work backwards from your actual kit. A lightweight single-cylinder tropical setup needs far less wing than a cold-water steel twinset with a drysuit and accessories.
Think about exposure protection and weighting
Your suit changes the whole buoyancy picture. A diver in a 3 mm wetsuit is working with a very different setup from a diver in a drysuit with thick undergarments.
The more buoyant the exposure kit at the surface, the more lift and ballast management become relevant.
