Since Shearwater's inception in 2004, Shearwater Research Inc. has been driven by the passion and vision of our founder, Bruce Partridge. With a  background in computer systems design, embedded programming, and advanced technical diving, Bruce introduced a unique perspective to the world of dive computers. He believed that divers deserved a simple, intuitive user interface, something previously unavailable in dive computers and rebreather control systems. This vision led to the creation of user-friendly menu structures that truly made sense to divers.

As an experienced rebreather and open-circuit technical diver, Bruce Partridge understood the importance of offering divers reasonable choices with minimal button pushes, especially during stressful underwater situations. This insight led to the development of Shearwater Research's first dive computers, which quickly became popular among technical divers for their intuitive design and advanced capabilities.

Shearwater soon became a major supplier of trimix computers and electronic control systems for rebreathers.
