SubGravity Delayed Surface Marker Buoys or DSMBs (also known and commonly referred to SMBs / Surface Marker Buoys) increase diver safety by providing maximum visibility and a source of redundant flotation. An SMB is an invaluable tool for just about any diver. An SMB indicates to surrounding boats that there are divers in the water. Divers also use SMBs to note their position during a drift dive or drift decompression.
When considering why an SMB is used, it is simple to see why it needs to be highly visible. Subgravity SMBs are available in orange, hot pink or neon yellow for divers who wish to carry one colour for “regular use” and another colour to signal emergency situations. Our SMBs are also built with a thick strip of Coast Guard approved SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea) reflective tape near the top, along with a elastic loop to secure a light stick to enhance visibility in low light conditions.
Sub Gravity offers a variety of sizes and colours, allowing divers to select the best option for their chosen environment. Divers in calm conditions and/or on shallow dives often choose a the smaller 1m SMB. In rougher or more unpredictable seas, divers may carry a slightly larger SMBs (1.5m or 2.0m), which increases visibility.
